1946 Ford Convertible

OK.....onto the 1946 ford convertible. The customer brought the car in because it had a mysterious, and puzzling issue that had been going on for quite some time. It seems that every time the car would go on a trip...it would cut off??? (hmmmmmm??) It only seemed, according to the customer, to happen when exiting left hand ramps. Once he pulled over to the side and let it sit for a few... the car would start again and away the would go!
After speaking to the car owner, and having him give a step-by-step recount of exactly what happened and how, it was determined there was a problem in the electrical system. (because it not only shut off...but sometimes when turning the key..nothing at all would happen) Now...we just had to find the "little monster"!
But, before we hunted for the gremlin the customer had a few other requests he wanted us to take care of:
1) Drop the gas tank and check to make sure everthing was "clean and clear"
2) Remove the electric fuel pump and all of it's components and lines
3) Install a mechanical fuel pump and run all new lines
4) Re-adjust the carb
5) Adjust the gas pedal and linkage
After performing all of the above items....it was back to the "little monster" and finding its source for the mysterious shut-offs? It wasn't long, after checking all the wiring for shorts, bad connections, grounding issues etc, we found the problem.
Under the carpet, on the drivers side, was a white wire w/multiple nicks (and in some areas the coating was completely gone). The little white wire was tested and during this time it would show intermittenly different voltage readings. Sometime 2v and sometimes 10v....never consistent...just whatever it decided it wanted to be at that particular time. Tracing the wire back to it's source, it came from an alarm system that at some time during the life of the car had been installed...(but supposedly had been disconnected). MYSTERY SOLVED.....CAR FIXED!!
To date: the car has performed flawlessly for over 100 mi (prev. 10), and Nostalgia Works has added another satisfied customer to their list!!
Thanks so much for tuning in.....see ya next time!
